A cosa porta allevamento in consanguineità, che in 100 anni ha ucciso questa razza:

The Dutch Irish Wolfhound Club (DIWC/NIWC) including the Dutch Irish Wolfhound Foundation:
has decided that after 14 years of health testing among IW's of its members and genetic research for cancer, DCM and other heart defects as well as research in eye problems in IW's that, after selective breeding only with IW's which have passed the officially protocoled health tests, it will take drastic measures to try to give the breed a new impulse by an outcross. Hopefully this outcross will give better results for the breed than just using healthy IW's for breeding. It has been found that by only using healthy IW's for breeding the genepool is narrowed down even more, which has a negative effect on the breed.

We were informed of the following - the results of comparing DNA from IW's from our part of the world to DNA from IW's from other parts of the world lead to the conclusion that the DNA of all dogs is practically identical, while there is no family relations between these dogs at first sight. Parties have decided to sound the alarm and drafted an outcross program for the Irish Wolfhound.
Via PDE Henny van den Berg got in touch with David Cunningham, who has a lot of breeding experience and experience with outcrosses, also with IW's. David performed outcrosses previously. One of those was an outcross between a Malamute bitch and a pedigree Irish Wolfhound, and my first question was: Can you send us one or two outcrosses from that litter or from the F2 generation? David refused, because the pedigree Irish Wolfhound sire showed, on a later age, heart problems, so these dogs would not be the right foundation for our outcross program. We appreciated his honesty highly, and after several consultations we agreed we would start searching for a healthy IW male of respectable age. We would send sperm from this male to David with which he would impregnate his Malamute bitch, and we would bring some of the puppies to The Netherlands.

The first steps have already been taken - we have sent David the sperm of a 7 years old IW which is still fit to function, free of heart and eye problem. David has had the heart and eyes of his Malamute bitch also tested, and even had additional health testing dome. The sperm has arrived and now we are waiting for the Malamute bitch to come into season.
If David successfully produces puppies from the sperm we sent him, these new genes will hopefully add health and longevity to (our line of) the Irish wolfhound breed.
